Giddy Up Rustlers to the Safe Trails Route to School

Safe or not safe? That question was the focus of the event that was held Monday, August 19th during the school meet-n-greet from the Miller Community Center to the Miller School. Is it safe or not safe to NOT have a sidewalk from the Miller Community Center to the Miller School? NOT SAFE. Monday nights event demonstrated that families use that route and Miller wants our youth to be safe.
On Hand Development teamed up with the Miller School and we had a successful event with 29 students participating. That number does not include parents and siblings that tagged along. Each stop had a game, safety questions, and a small prize. We had 14 volunteers that helped organize, set up, and work the event. The Miller Police Department also joined to ensure safety.
So how is this event Economic Development? In economic development, the concept of “quality of life” includes a complex balance of indicators from jobs and education to healthcare and housing. It includes arts and culture and infrastructure. Crime and taxes count too. That’s why it’s so important to economic developers. Improving quality of life increases appeal for a community. It attracts (and retains) population, adds revenue and boosts recognition and reputation.
Quality of life is extremely hard to define but I prefer to think of quality of life as everything that makes a place worth calling home. I prefer to call home someplace where I know my kids are safe riding their bikes after school to the Miller Community Center for practice or walking to their friends house a few blocks away.
On Hand Development would like to invite anyone who would use or be impacted by the proposed sidewalk from the Miller Community Center to the Miller School to a public discussion at the city council meeting on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 7:00 pm at city hall.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers, the Miller School, the Miller Police Department and all of the students and parents who made our Giddy Up Rustlers to the Safe Trails Route to School event a success. On Hand Development hopes to bring more quality of life to Miller in the years to come.
